Top Flight Side Make Move For Oxford United Promotion Winner

Oxford United have offloaded one of their promotion-winning midfielders in Oisin Smyth to Scottish Premiership side St Mirren.

The Northern Irish international has struggled to make his mark for The U’s since his move from Dungannon Swifts in January 2022, only making a total of 25 appearances for the club.

He was loaned out to National League challengers Solihull Moors for a month-long loan following a tough spell under now-Salford City boss Karl Robinson in January 2023.

Under Liam Manning, he gained more first-team action but was still limited to time, only playing 16 times for Oxford. the 38-year-old departed for Bristol City in November, with Des Buckingham guiding the team to the Championship via the League One Playoff Final against Bolton Wanderers.

Smyth was the recipient of the club’s Goal of the Season award this season, scoring a wonder strike against Charlton Athletic in a 2-1 win on New Year’s Day when he made his first start for the club.

The move to the Paisley club is not the first time Oxford have sent a player north of the border this window, with Stuart Findlay being loaned out to Kilmarnock for the second season in a row.

Speaking to club media following his arrival at The Saints, the 24-year-old said: “I’ve been very impressed with the facilities. I just can’t wait to get going now and get playing.

“Following the club last season and seeing how well they did was a massive factor. There were a few factors that caught my attention so I’m glad to get the deal over the line.

My initial chats with the manager were very positive. The main thing we spoke on was development and how he is able to make players better. Game time was a massive factor for me. I wanted to come here and play and enjoy football again so that’s the main aim.

“I’ve had a few different roles where I’ve played deeper and I’ve played further forward as well. I’m happy to pop up wherever I’m needed.”

Stephen Robinson’s side had a successful season in the league, finishing in fifth place and securing a place in the Europa Conference League qualification stage.

Oisin Smyth has had a difficult time at Oxford United, being left out of the squad for much of his spell. He thrived at his first club in Dungannon but has struggled to make a mark since arriving at the Kassam Stadium. Luckily he became a semi-regular choice for United this season, with 17 appearances as they secured a place in the Championship.

He is still a fairly young player with room to improve, and St Mirren will give him the minutes he needs to develop and gain experience. His versatility in the midfield will also benefit the club at a time they will need depth as they have a chance to make European football.
