Bristol City Suffer Blow In Transfer Pursuit

Bristol City face a fight to secure the services of Scott Twine on a permanent basis following the news that Sunderland and Birmingham City have joined the race, according to The Sun.

The 24-year-old looks set to depart Burnley this summer, having spent last season on loan at Hull City and then Bristol City. His move to Ashton Gate in January did come as somewhat of a surprise, having made 26 appearances for the Tigers during the first half of the campaign.

Twine picked up an injury on his debut for the Robins but still went on to feature 10 times. Chairman Jon Lansdown confirmed at the end of the season that he wanted to explore the option of making the deal a permanent one. Via Bristol Livehe said:

“Scott’s done well for us when we’ve managed to get him on the pitch and would be a good fit in that sense but, at the same time, it’s finding out what’s the viability of that? He’s obviously at a club and we don’t know where his club is going to be next season yet, and for us, we know we like the player and what he brings, it’s what does it cost and where does that fit? It’s the same with anyone.

“He’s done well, he’s obviously worked with Liam before and has been a positive influence on the squad; all of those boxes are ticked, it’s just where it fits in with everything else and whether it’s feasible or not. It’s something we’ll obviously explore, along with everything else, because it is a position we need.”

It appears as if the Championship outfit now face a battle to land his signature though. It is claimed that Sunderland are also keen, whilst Birmingham are hoping to tempt the ex-Swindon Town player to help them get out of League One at the first time of asking.

The Black Cats are hoping to add quality reinforcements to their playing squad as they look to launch a promotion assault next season. The Wearsiders are set for a busy few months as they look to finally land their new Head Coach, whilst key stars such as Jack Clarke and Jobe Bellingham are expected to attract interest from the Premier League and beyond.

Birmingham however, suffered a shock relegation and know that they will be one of the favourites to win the third tier. They will be heavily backed by their US owners, although it remains to be seen as to whether they can convince a player to drop to League One when there are potential suitors in the Championship.

Twine has two years remaining on his contract at Turf Moor and is valued at £2.5 million.

It would be no surprise to see more clubs enter the race for Scott Twine in the coming weeks. He is a player who can be a game changer, but Bristol City will be hoping that the brief spell he had at the club will see them emerge as the frontrunners. However, Sunderland are a big club with big ambitions and he may feel that a move to the Stadium of Light is too good to turn down.

You have to feel that the Birmingham link is a bit of a non-starter. Whereas they will undoubtedly make some big signings this summer, Twine is a player who is far too good for League One and still has age on his side. There is no reason for him to drop back into League One at this stage of his career.
