MK Dons face a fight to secure the services of Jack Payne on a permanent basis, with League One clubs also tracking his signature, The Real EFL understands.
The 29-year-old enjoyed a stellar campaign at Stadium MK after joining on a season-long loan from Charlton Athletic. He became an ever-present in the centre of midfield upon Mike Williamson’s arrival in October, going on to score six times in 40 League Two appearances.
Payne played a key role in the Dons’ push for promotion, although they just fell short of a spot in the top three. As a result, they were condemned to the play-offs, where they suffered a complete capitulation in the semi-final against Crawley Town.
The playmaker returned to the Valley upon the end of his loan spell, although he was allowed to leave following the expiration of his contract. We reported last month that the Berkshire side were keen to bring him back to the club this summer, something they are still pushing for. Despite that, a battle is underway to land the serial promotion winner, with clubs in League One also expressing an interest.
Congratulations to our monthly award winners for the February campaign 🙌

The former Lincoln City man has achieved success in every tier of the EFL, having celebrated promotion with Southend United in League Two, Blackburn Rovers in League One and Huddersfield Town in the Championship. It’s this record which makes him an attractive proposition.
Earlier this week, Swindon Town Head of Football Jamie Russell confirmed that the Robins were interested in bringing Payne back to the club, having enjoyed a successful spell at the County Ground between 2020 and 2022. He contributed 18 goals and 13 assists in 88 appearances and was a big hit amongst supporters. However, talks over a potential return are yet to begin.
Whilst it is unknown who in League One is monitoring the situation, MK Dons will be confident when it comes to convincing their former loanee to re-join. They will be one of the favourites to challenge for the League Two title next season, which may appeal more than other offers on the table.
