West Bromwich Albion are preparing to take on Southampton at The Hawthorns tomorrow afternoon but work has commenced behind the scenes to sign players to strengthen the squad ahead of next season.
The recruitment department at West Brom are in a tricky position where they will need to plan for both scenarios: Championship and Premier League football. Should the Baggies put the Saints to the sword over the next two games, a tie against either Leeds United or Norwich City awaits them at Wembley by the end of the month.
Having recently been bought over by Shilen Patel mid-season after the quite contentious reign of Lai Guochuan, the West Midlands outfit will have an injection of cash ahead of the summer window but financial restraints caused by the previous ownership mean that the club’s budget will still be a little tight.
As a result, West Bromwich Albion will need to be smart during the transfer market to sign players for a relatively low fee that can improve the squad in certain areas. One area in need of boosting that has been identified by the club is the centre-forward position.
According to a report from the Sheffield Star, West Brom are weighing up a move for Sheffield Wednesday frontman Josh Windass this summer. The former Rangers and Wigan Athletic star has been at Hillsborough for five years in which he bagged 40 goals in 135 appearances. In his entire career, the 30-year-old has scored 91 times 350 matches across a variety of different levels in England and Scotland.

Furthermore, the outlet are claiming that the Baggies face stiff competition for Windass as Derby County and Stoke City are also in the running for his signature as the experienced attacker is out of contract this summer after Sheffield Wednesday pulled off the great escape in the Championship.

One area that West Bromwich Albion struggle the most is in front of goal. Of all the teams that finished in the top ten of the Championship this season, only Hull City found the net fewer times than Carlos Corberan’s men.
Windass is not an out-and-out centre-forward. He has played in a number of different positions throughout his career, including on the wing and in the number ’10’ role but can contribute with goals, making him a solid acquisition for any Championship club, especially since he is available for free within a matter of weeks.
