Sunderland Face Stiff Competition For International Star

Sunderland are scouring the transfer market ahead of this summer’s transfer window and have identified a Championship winger who is out of contract this summer, according to reports.

The Black Cats face a difficult transfer window ahead. Keeping hold of players like Jack Clarke, who recorded 19 goal contributions this season for the club, is looking increasingly unlikely with teams in the Premier League interested in signing the goalscoring winger.

Furthermore, the board have yet to appoint a new manager to succeed Mike Dodds in the dugout permanently. Once the head coach position has been unvacated, work can begin in the background to start recruiting players that will strengthen the squad ahead of a potential push for promotion next season.

Nevertheless, the hierarchy have still been identifying players that could have an impact at the Stadium of Light in the 2024/25 campaign. According to Spanish outlet Diario AS, Sunderland have joined the race for Leeds United star Ian Poveda, who has spent the season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

The two-cap Colombia international is out of contract at Elland Road at the end of the campaign but won’t be short of offers. The outlet is claiming that the Black Cats are in the running alongside Premier League clubs Luton Town and Burnley, while Sheffield Wednesday are hoping he will sign a permanent deal at Hillsborough.

Poveda made 20 appearances in all competitions for the Owls this season, including 17 in the Championship, while recording one assist but spent the last few weeks of the campaign on the sidelines, hindering his game-time.

Should Clarke leave the club this summer, Poveda could be a good option on the flanks to replace the attacker, although he certainly didn’t get anywhere near the Sunderland star’s output in the final third this season.

Nevertheless, the 24-year-old knows what it takes to get promoted, having won the Championship title in 2020 with Leeds which could add valuable experience to an otherwise young squad at the Stadium of Light.
