Former Sheffield Wednesday Defender Transfer ‘Didn’t Work Perfectly’

Former Sheffield Wednesday defender Jaden Brown is seemingly on his way out of Lincoln City following a revelation by the club’s Director of Football, Jez George.

George, speaking to BBC Radio Lincolnshire, discussed a range of topics regarding the Imps, including players coming and going. One player who has come and gone this season is left-sided wing-back Jaden Brown.

After two seasons at Sheffield Wednesday, Brown signed for the Imps last summer. He struggled in the early part of the season with fitness and then found himself sidelined under Mark Kennedy. When the Imps changed manager, Brown had his chances, but after four appearances for head coach Michael Skubala, he was sent on loan to St Mirren.

He only appeared a handful of times in Scotland, always as a substitute, and while he returns to the LNER Stadium this summer, it appears his future is in doubt. George, who has been Imps DoF for over four years now, revealed that the singing of Brown hadn’t really worked.

“Every single signing doesn’t work perfectly,” George said. “He didn’t quite hit the ground running. I think if the right offer was there for Jaden, we wouldn’t want to stand in his way.”

It’s yet another blow for the player, who looked set for a glittering career. He came through the ranks at Spurs and was part of the England under-16 team that won the Montaigu Tournament in 2015. He later represented his country up to Under 19 level, but left Spurs for Huddersfield in 2019.

A loan spell at Exeter didn’t bring senior football, and he departed the Terriers in 2021, signing for Sheffield Wednesday. As at Huddersfield, he had a tough time at Hillsborough, appearing 32 times in two seasons before being released last summer when the Imps picked him up.

Writer’s View

Brown has talent, there’s no doubt, but he’s struggling to settle anywhere. He is 25 now and shouldn’t be scrabbling for another chance somewhere else; he should be in the prime of his career. Niggly injuries haven’t helped, but he clearly needs a club where he can feel wanted and part of something bigger.

Perhaps a move back to his native London would help, or possibly somewhere closer like Cambridge United. Often, the pressure of moving away at a young age can cause problems for players used to big city life, and maybe a move closer to home would help him feel settled and able to recreate the sort of form he threatened in the past.
