New Swindon Town Man Thankful For Chances

Nnamdi Ofoborh has expressed his gratitude following his first full 90 minutes in a Swindon Town shirt last weekend.

The 24-year-old joined The Robins at the end of March after being released by Scottish Premiership giants Rangers at the start of the season and made his debut in the final moments of a 2-1 win against Notts County.

This was quickly followed with starts against Sutton United and most recently against Barrow, where he played a full match for the first time in over three years.

Speaking to club media following the 2-0 win at Holker Street, the ex-Wycombe Wanderers man was grateful to the coaching setup in Wiltshire for their faith. He said: “I think this is exactly what we deserve based on our performance today, I thought we could have got a lot more but we will take that into next week (against AFC Wimbledon).

“But we just have to keep going, we have a good group here, so hopefully we can build on that and finish the season well.

“I didn’t think I would even be starting back-to-back games this soon, but like I said, I am just thankful to God and thankful to the coaching staff that trusted in me and the players are helping me get through these games, so hopefully we can keep going.”

The former Bournemouth youth captain was brought to Ibrox by Steven Gerrard but did not play a single game for the Glasgow club due to a heart problem.

Ofoborh had previously been training with Swindon prior to his signing and has since impressed new boss Gavin Gunning with his performances. Speaking to the media, the Irish coach said (Quotes via Swindon Advertiser): “He was seriously ill and he has come back from that and he has been fortunate to have the best heart people in the whole world looking after him. We have just got to be happy that we have got him and he just brings a different aspect to our game.”

Swindon’s season is effectively over as they are safe from relegation this year, with Sutton United and Forest Green Rovers unable to surpass The Robins’ current total of 50 points.

After welcoming Wimbledon to The County Ground, they face Walsall, Grimsby Town and Morecambe to cap off their third straight season in the fourth tier.

Writer’s View

Nnamdi Ofoborh has had a very difficult three years. Being unable to play due to his condition must have been tough, and Swindon have been able to give him a second chance in football. Gavin Gunning looks delighted with his performances so far and is probably relishing having a new aspect to his midfield options.

The Nigerian will likely be around next season and from what he has shown so far seems to still be displaying the potential Rangers saw in him three years ago. Whilst competition to start will be fierce, adding Ofoborh alongside Jake Cain and George McEachran, Swindon have a very exciting young midfield that will only have more room to grow going forward.
