For Southampton fans, the recent development of Brighton and Hove Albion holding talks with head coach Russell Martin over the international break could unsettle the team ahead of their final seven Championship fixtures.
Brighton themselves are in quite a predicament at the moment, with their eccentric manager Roberto De Zerbi being heavily linked with a step away from the Seagulls. With Liverpool looking likely to circle for the Italian’s signature once Jurgen Klopp departs at the end of the season, it is said that De Zerbi is also being monitored by European giants Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

With that being said, the seaside club have turned their attention to the Southampton boss, who is one of their ex-youth academy graduates. After a somewhat shocking relegation from the Premier League last season, the Saints have undergone a rebuild of sorts to manage the financial differences in the Championship and prepare to mount an instant return to the top-flight.
While some may argue that the Hampshire-based outfit have failed to meet expectations, Martin has instilled a slick, possession-orientated style of football which has inevitably landed him on Brighton’s radar.
The ex-Swansea City head coach took charge at the beginning of the season and experienced a relatively slow start to life at St. Mary’s. However, Martin has proven to be more than an adequate manager who loves to learn and tackle problems head-on to ensure results are there for the taking.
Southampton To Rival Manchester United For £2.1 Million-Rated Gem
The former Scotland international plays a high-risk brand of football which tested his squad’s resolve and raised a few eyebrows at the start of his tenure. Nevertheless, this uncertainty of his tactics and management quality was immediately quashed by a 25-game unbeaten run in all competitions, which lasted until mid-February.
It looks increasingly likely that Southampton’s recent goalless draw away at Ewood Park could have scuppered any real chance of challenging the top three sides for automatic promotion this year. But commendable performances and impressive domination against good sides have earned Martin the chance to become De Zerbi’s successor at the Amex.

While no decision has been made on the Saints boss’ appointment, the recent reports could be a hammer blow to the team’s momentum as they look set for the play-offs this season. A loss of concentration could be the difference between reaching the Premier League and falling agonisingly short. With seven games to go and, should they go all the way, three in the play-off, the Hampshire side will have to shut out any distractions regarding their manager’s uncertain future.
As for Martin, the revelation of a potential approach from a club challenging for European football could also be the necessary inspiration to take Southampton to the next level; a strong, composed end to the season would exemplify exactly why his CV has been compared to De Zerbi’s.
