The season is coming to a close and it is make or break for those sides playing for promotion or survival in League One.
Having someone who can regularly find the back of the net is vital to a successful side. Here, we take a closer look at those who are outperforming expectations when in front of goal.
All data is sourced via FotMob and the players must have at least 10 league goals.
Chris Martin – 15 goals from 8.8xG (+6.2 difference)
Veteran Bristol Rovers striker Martin is enjoying the twilight years of his career and has returned an impressive 6.2 goals more than what the statistics believe his chances merited.
The former Derby County striker has proven himself lethal with both feet and his head and his goals have gone a long way to ensuring The Pirates have achieved a comfortable mid-table finish.
Sam Hoskins – 14 goals from 10.1xG (+3.9 difference)
Hoskins has made over 370 appearances for Northampton Town and helped the club to promotion from League Two last season with 22 goals.
He has continued his form this year, managing to find the net 14 from just a 10.1xG as the Cobblers have secured League One safety.
Devante Cole – 17 goals from 13.2xG (+3.8 difference)
The name Cole is, for a certain generation, synonymous with goals. Devante’s father Andy Cole was a prolific goal-getter in the imperious Manchester United team of the 1990s.
Devante didn’t find goals as easy to come by but he has carried his fine form of last season into this campaign and currently sits on 17 goals.
Cole’s goals have played a major part in Barnsley looking odds on for a playoff spot come the end of the season. The Tykes will, however, be hoping he can recapture his scoring form as he has been without a goal since early February.
Alfie May – 21 goals from 17.4xG (+3.6 difference)
Charlton Athletic striker Alfie May was hot property during the summer after his Cheltenham Town contract ended.
The Addicks got their man and would have hoped his goals would have spearheaded a promotion push. That hasn’t been the case for Charlton as they’ve found themselves struggling towards the bottom of the table and are on their third manager of the season.
May’s return of 21 goals from an expected 17 has at least guided the club to safety and a chance to build a promotion-challenging side for next season under Nathan Jones.
Ephrom Mason-Clark – 13 goals from 9.5xG (+3.5 difference)
The Coventry City-bound winger has been an integral part of Peterborough United’s playoff push this season.
Mason-Clark has managed 13 goals, a return 3.5 above expected as the Posh look to make amends for last season’s playoff nightmare against Sheffield Wednesday.
The 24-year-old has formed a deadly double act with fellow young prospect Kwame Poku and Darren Ferguson will be looking to the pair to produce the goods and give him yet another promotion with Peterborough.
