Sutton United Sign Once Highly-Rated Striker

Sutton United have announced via club media the signing of striker Deon Moore from Isthmian League side Lewes.

Moore would make 67 appearances for the Rooks during a three-season spell with the club, scoring 13 times in the process.

Over the past few seasons, the striker has applied his trade for various non-league sides, turning out for Bath City, Hemel Hempstead and Dulwich Hamlet in recent seasons amongst others. His performances however at Lewes have earned him a move to the League Two outfit, with new Sutton manager Steve Morison impressed with what he has seen of the striker.

Prior to replacing former-manager Matt Gray, Morison was head coach of Hornchurch who also play in the Isthmian League alongside Lewes. That is what has supposedly influenced the decision to sign the 24-year-old, based on his performances against Morison’s former club this season.

Although he may have played in the lower tiers of the non-league pyramid over the past few seasons, Moore was once held in an extremely high regard.

Making his professional debut for Peterborough at just 17 years of age, Moore has never filled that original potential. He’d turn out for Posh six times as well as a further three times for Bristol Rovers, but has not returned to the EFL since.

Sutton famously have one of, if not the, lowest budgets in the EFL and the signing is one that is expected based both on previous signings that have been made but also the club’s finances. The U’s currently sit in 23rd in League Two a whole five points off of safety. That being said, drastic improvements have been seen in recent weeks and they do also have two games in hand on 22nd-placed Colchester United.

It is unknown what sort of role Moore will play at the club, but it certainly seems like a huge punt by new manager Morison.

Writer’s View

We may well look at the signing of Moore as one of the signings of the season if he can fulfil the original potential he showed at Peterborough. That being said it does seem a huge roll of the dice by Morison, but one which will not cost the club too much in the financial department.

A couple more names will be expected through the doors of Gander Green Lane come the end of the window and Sutton obviously need to strengthen given their position in the table. Given their underdog mentality which has been seen in recent seasons, they may just be able to pull off an escape from relegation with the right signings coming in this January.
