Leeds United Dealt Significant Blow In Transfer Pursuit

Leeds United have suffered a blow in their hopes to make Joe Rodon’s loan deal a permanent one following the news that Tottenham Hotspur could request up to £20 million for his services, according to Football Insider.

The Welsh international joined the Yorkshire outfit on a season-long loan in the summer after returning to North London from a similar deal at French club Rennes. However, his spell in Ligue 1 included an option to buy clause of €20 million, although they opted against a permanent move at the end of last season after he fell out of favour in the second half of the season.

Rodon has enjoyed a new lease of life at Elland Road, showing the qualities that convinced Spurs to fork out an initial £11 million for his services in 2020 from Swansea City. He has made just 24 appearances for the Premier League club in all competitions since, but has already matched that number during his stint at the Whites.

His performances have earned plaudits from fans and media alike and Leeds are thought to be keen on bringing him to the club on a full-time basis. It is claimed that they would like to conclude a deal as soon as possible due to his current form, and they are well aware his asking price could increase if his second half of the campaign matches the first.

It appears as if Tottenham are savvy to this though and have already inflated the fee they would accept. Football Insider state that they could demand £15 million, which could rise to £20 million depending on the number of interested parties.

As a result, any deal is unlikely to be concluded this month and there could be a race for his signature during the summer for the 26-year-old.

Leeds currently sit fourth in the Championship, four points behind third placed Southampton and seven behind Ipswich Town in second. Daniel Farke will not have given up hope on securing an automatic promotion spot and will be targeting a third successive league win this weekend when they host Preston North End.

Tottenham’s asking price is fanciful, especially as Rodon will only have one year remaining on his contract come summer. Still, they’re well within their rights to push for as much cash as possible and his strong season at Leeds will strengthen their hand.

It appears as if the Welshman is enjoying his stint at Elland Road and he could be tempted to push for a move. However, should the Whites fail to secure promotion, a number of Premier League clubs could be interested which may turn his head. He has just 15 appearances to his name in the top tier and will be desperate to prove he can cope with the rigours of the division.
