The Daily Echo have revealed that Bournemouth midfielder Joe Rothwell is undergoing a medical, ahead of a potential loan move to Championship side Southampton.
The Cherries midfielder has made 15 appearances under manager Andoni Iraola this season, including starting the first three Premier League games of the season. But with players returning from injury, the 29-year old has dropped down the pecking order, and is potentially looking for a move away from The Vitality Stadium.
He has come off the bench for his last eight league appearances under Iraola, and now looks to seek regular game time, with Rusell Martin looking to strengthen his side, for their push towards promotion back to the top flight. Rothwell last made a 20 minute appearance for Bournemouth in their 3-2 win away to Nottingham Forest on the 23rd of December.
Southampton currently sit third in The Championship table, three points behind Ipswich Town in the race for the second automatic promotion spot. They ran out comfortable 4-0 winners Saturday afternoon at home to Sheffield Wednesday, stretching their unbeaten run in all competitions to 20 games.
Despite the rumours, there hasn’t been much speculation around transfers from manager Martin, with him stating that he looks to leave the transfer business to Director of Football Jason Wilcox.
Speaking to the Daily Echo Martin stated: “I trust them and they only bring stuff to the table for me when it’s really important because we have a job to focus on.
“We’re concentrating on coaching the team and getting ready for the game. As far as I know, it’s all good.”
If The Saints can get the deal over the line, they will be hoping to get their new man straight in to action this coming weekend, as they visit Martin’s former side Swansea City, hoping to maintain their unbeaten run.
Southampton have been on a remarkable run, since a run of four defeats on the bounce earlier this season. They have a clear gulf of class compared to some of the other side’s in the division, and if they can strengthen further with Premier League level midfielders, they will be right in the mix for promotion.
Rothwell is a talented midfielder who has vast experience in Premier League and Championship football. The former Manchester United academy and England youth player would be a great addition to The Saints midfield.
