Blackburn Rovers are currently struggling in the Championship and boast the worst defensive record in the league, having conceded 52 times in just 27 matches this season.
The Riversiders suffered another dismal defeat this weekend by losing 4-1 to West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns, having gone 3-0 down within the opening 33 minutes. Despite having the lion’s share of possession, Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side conceded 16 shots which recorded an xG of 3.12, as per FotMob.
The result leaves the former Premier League champions eight points adrift of the final playoff place, currently occupied by Coventry City, while Blackburn are also just ten points above the relegation, with games against Huddersfield Town and Queens Park Rangers still to come over the next few weeks.
It was reported by journalist Alan Nixon that Blackburn Rovers were eyeing up reinforcements at the back amid a turgid defensive record and have identified Leeds United academy product Charlie Cresswell as a possible acquisition.
Cresswell has been left out in the cold by Leeds manager Daniel Farke. The German coach admitted that Cresswell has been left frustrated with his lack of minutes but that he won’t be chosen in the squad until he’s “mentally ready”.
It has also been revealed that the promotion-chasers are willing to let Cresswell leave if the right bid comes in. The Yorkshire Evening Post have claimed that Leeds will accept a bid in the region of £4-5 million for the centre-half, with clubs such as Blackburn, Middlesbrough and Ipswich Town interested.
Furthermore, Alan Nixon has added an update on the transfer saga this morning, reporting that former loan club Millwall have joined the race for Cresswell’s signature, hoping to secure a deal before the window slams shut at the end of the month.
Writer’s View
Cresswell has played just 309 minutes in total for Leeds United this season, spread across six appearances in all competitions, which certainly isn’t enough for a young player, meaning he will likely leave the club before the transfer window closes.
Blackburn Rovers should be all over this deal. The side are leaking goals left, right and centre and Cresswell is a Championship-proven defender. However, a return to Millwall also seems likely given the 21-year-old knows the club well after spending last season on loan at The Den.
