Former Championship Chairman Rules Out Buying Reading

Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has ruled out purchasing Reading amid confirmation that the club have been placed under another transfer embargo.

Reading have had a dismal start to life in League One following relegation from the Championship last term. The Royals are currently sitting third from bottom in the table with five points but more pressing concerns have taking place off the pitch.

The Telegraph reported yesterday that Reading had been placed under a transfer embargo after failing to pay the HMRC on time, yet again, and will be subject to a further points deduction if player and staff wages are not paid by this Friday.

This is the third transfer embargo the club have endured in three months, further highlighting how torrid Dai Yongge’s reign has been at the Madejski Stadium.

Reading have already had four points deducted this season and it’s only September, meaning the former Premier League side potentially face a third if payment isn’t submitted to the HMRC by the start of the weekend.

Nevertheless, The Telegraph are also claiming that there are three interested parties willing to enter negotiations to buy the club from the Chinese businessman, although these suitors have not been named.

However, speaking on talkSPORT this morning, former Palace chairman Simon Jordan was asked about whether he was interested in taking over the reigns to which he responded with a resounding no [quotes via James Earnshaw]:

“Not particularly [interested in buying the club]. During the time that John ran it, they were a well-run football club. A strange fella was John, but not withstanding that he produced a decent football club.

“He built a decent football club in a smaller part of the football family, in terms of Reading and that neck of the woods. And turned them from where they played at Elm Park to the Madejski Stadium. They had a decent tilt at it.

“It is a decent buy for someone who wants to buy a football club for reasons of building it up to give itself a chance.”

There has been nothing but despair for Reading supporters over the last twelve months and that looks set to continue this Friday. However, there may be light at the end of the tunnel.

The Royals’ downward trajectory under Dai Yongee has been terrifying to watch unfold but new owners may be set to take their places in the corporate boxes very soon.
