Former Peterborough United goalkeeper Mark Tyler is a candidate to join the coaching staff at Doncaster Rovers, according to the Peterborough Telegraph.
League Two Rovers are managed by the ex-Posh gaffer Grant McCann and, having served on his coaching staff twice already, Tyler is being linked with a move to the Eco-Power Stadium following the departure of another former Posh goalie, Ian Bennett.
Who is Mark Tyler?
Tyler spent over 20 years of his career with Peterborough and amassed over 300 appearances for the club between 1994-2009 and from 2016 until leaving the club in May.
Born in Norwich, the ex-stopper began his career with The Posh and went on loan to Hull City, Watford and Bury during his time at the club. He experienced promotion via the playoffs with the club at the turn of the century and was part of the 2007-08 squad that finished runners-up in League Two but had lost his place in the team to Joe Lewis.
Game time would be hard to find for Tyler and, following his loan to Bury, the keeper would join Conference team Luton Town. He would be crowned Player of the Year in 2011 and was named in the Conference Team of the Season in 2012 and also in 2013-14, a season that saw The Hatters return to the Football League on the first step of their incredible journey back to the top flight.
After two seasons in League Two with the Kenilworth Road side, Tyler would return to Peterborough to act as cover and take on the role of goalkeeper coach.
What’s been said?
McCann has spoken of the possibility of adding to his coaching staff and shaping it in the way that he wants. The Northern Irishman said, “Myself and Gavin (Baldwin, CEO) are going to be looking at the structure of the staff and what we can do. That doesn’t mean people are going to be losing their jobs, it’s more ‘where can we structure to the way we want?'”
Writer’s View
After the departure of Ian Bennett, there is a gap in the coaching staff at Doncaster specifically in the goalkeeping department. By appointing Tyler, no one would be required to lose their job and it would allow McCann to structure the way he wants, bringing in someone he has worked with previously on two occasions to help build a way of winning for the club.
Tyler would be a positive appointment for the League Two club, bringing vast playing and coaching experience to pass on to the young goalkeeping department currently at the club. Having worked together before, the pair respect and trust each other which can only bode well for the club moving forward.
