Opinion: The League One & Two Team of the Week

With the midweek games for League one & two done for the week, we think it is worth looking at the top performances from both divisions and announce our Team of the Week. Today, The Real EFL’s _ will discuss who has made his squad this week.

As it was a double game-week with games on the Saturday and Tuesday, i’ve taken it upon myself to combine the two matches and grade the players on their performance in both. (So for people crying about Dion Charles not making the team despite scoring a hat-trick, unfortunately he didn’t do anything against MK Dons, so hasn’t made this XI).

So now we’ve got that out of that way, let’s get into our ‘Team of the Week’ from the past two matches.

Goalkeeper – Nik Tzanev AFC Wimbledon, Two Clean Sheets & 10 Saves

AFC Wimbledon are rounded out in the middle of League Two, however Tzanev had two great performances this week getting his side some draws.

With games against Carlisle and Northampton – who are both fighting for automatic promotion, they are two of the highest scorers amongst the league. Yet the New Zealand goalkeeper held them both to zero goals.

Defender – Matthew Platt Bradford City, One Clean Sheet, 15 Clearances

Bradford had a great week after taking down 2nd place Stevenage, and continued that form into Tranmere. Platt played his part in both fixtures, with eight crucial clearances to hold on against Boro and a clean sheet in their victory to Tranmere.

Defender – Ricardo Santos Bolton Wanderers, Three Goals, Two Clean Sheets & seven Interceptions

From the centre-back position, Santos is the highest scorer in this weeks team, as he shows the strikers how it’s done.

Bolton have experienced a fantastic last few days, with back-to-back 5-0 wins and the captain scoring three times. Add two clean sheets to that, and you couldn’t have asked for a better week for the Portuguese international.

Defender – Luke Mbete Bolton Wanderers, One Goal, Two Clean Sheets

A part of the same back three which saw Wanderers smash both of their opponents, Mbete was also able to get his name on the scoresheet. To go along with his goal and clean sheets, the 19-year old was solid defensively with five interceptions and tackles.

Defender – Mickey Demetriou Newport County, One Goal, 11 Clearances & Zero Dribbles Past

Mickey Demetriou is no stranger to the Football League, entering his ninth season in the competition, the captain is still at the top of his game. Playing on the left side of a back three, the defender notched himself a goal this week, while collecting four points and some breathing room from the relegation area.

Midfielder – Luca Connell Barnsley, One Goal & One Assist

Connell doesn’t necessarily always find himself always getting involved in the third phase of play, nevertheless he is a consistent performer from the central midfield position and popped up into it this week.

20 minutes into Port Vale away on Tuesday, Connell got involved in the goals twice as he helped push Barnsley closer to the automatic spots.

Midfielder – Idris El Mizouni Leyton Orient, One Goal, 14 tackles & 88% Pass Accuracy

Much like Connell, El Mizouni is a firm central midfield who does his work defensively but also found his name on the scoresheet this time round. The 22-year old Tunisian, is at large part of the reason Orient are currently flying in League Two, with his 13 ground duels and 10 tackles against Walsall making him a force in the middle.

Midfielder – Alistair Smith Sutton United, One Goal & Five Key Passes

Playing as a No.8 for Sutton, the Scotsman was pinging the ball around this week. Smith was on show against both Hartlepool and Swindon, as his desire to move the ball downfield led to his side scoring four goals and a nice jump up the table.

Attacker – Kyle Wooton Stockport Country, Two Goals & One Assist

Stockport were a new entry into League Two after getting promotion from the National League in April, but that hasn’t stopped them fighting near the top of the division. Wooton bagged himself another three goal contributions this week, as his side got the maximum six points.

Attacker -Josh Windass Sheffield Wednesday, Two Goals & Two Assists

We head back to League One for our next attacker, with Wednesday’s striker having himself quite the week. Windass’s two assists against Ipswich were unluckily not enough to see Sheffield win the clash near the top, though his two goals in the next game to Morecambe were.

The Englishman, has been a great do-it-all striker for the League One side this season, and he continued to impress in both games this week.

Attacker -Andy Cook Bradford City, Two Goals & Two Assists

The 2nd joint highest goalscorer in League 2 rounds out this Team of the Week, with the experienced No.9 getting himself three goal contributions in the Bantams away victory to Stevenage this past Saturday.

Cook’s tally of 16 goals in League 2 matches this season keeps on growing, as Bradford now find themselves just outside the playoff spots.
