Forest Green Man To Depart On Loan

Matty Stevens is expected to complete a deadline day loan move to League Two side Walsall, as reported by Pete O’Rourke.

Stevens was key for Forest Green in their promotion season last year as he scored 23 goals in 37 appearances for the club in League Two. Since then, however, he has only made five appearances for the club in League One this year, due to an ACL injury suffered in April last year, failing to score in any of them.

The League One side sit bottom of the league and chose to bring in a forward in Jahmari Clarke from Reading on loan for the remainder of this season, paving the way for Stevens to exit on loan.

Stevens is a lethal goalscorer in League Two, he proved it last year with his tally at the end of the season with Forest Green, however his ACL injury seems to have affected his confidence with his lack of goals since returning to the side in December, and is yet to start a game for the Gloucestershire side this season.

The move comes as a shock slightly, as the club turned down an approach from League Two outfit Northampton Town in the days prior, however developments with Clarke joining on loan allow the club to replace a man they know can score goals, as well as give their striker a chance to regain his confidence in a division he was more than suited to scoring in last season.

All that remains is for Walsall to hold up their side of what they need to offer the player in providing service for the striker to score goals, the team have been in need of someone who can score goals, having scored only 30 this season in League Two, and 12 of those have come from Danny Johnson, with their closest scorer behind him scoring three.

Walsall fans, can Stevens help your side score more goals?
