Portsmouth have reportedly entered the race to sign Jake O’Brien on loan from Premier League side Crystal Palace, reports The Irish Examiner.
The 21-year-old has spent the season so far on loan with RWD Molenbeek, who are currently top of the Belgian second division. The Blues face competition from Championship club Bristol City who also require defensive reinforcements, as well as League One rivals Wycombe Wanderers.
The Irishman joined Crystal Palace from Cork City and is currently enjoying his second loan spell, after spending the second half of last season in League Two with Swindon Town where he helped the side reach the playoffs before defeat in the semi-final.
Our Verdict
While it is believed that Crystal Palace sees the youngster as ready for the Championship level, it may not be that Bristol City is the destination to choose for him. Portsmouth would be the destination to choose for him. The club are in a dire situation in the league and it could be a test of character for the defender just as much as his ability.
And the young Irishman certainly looks the part of what Portsmouth needs in their defensive line, he has been a key figure in the Molenbeek back line, predominantly starting in the middle of a back three, something which has helped shape their charge up the table conceding the fewest goals in the division while doing so.
He also is a player who is capable of finding the back net as he scored this past weekend for the Belgian outfit bringing his tally up to two for the season, as well as making his mark with an assist to his name this season.
One thing is certain, the youngster has a big decision to make on his future, and the next club he signs for could be key in his career.
Portsmouth fans, do you think you can get your man?
