Blackburn Rovers Defender Set For League Two Switch

Blackburn Rovers right-back James Brown could be set for a move to Doncaster Rovers, according to Alan Nixon via his Patreon page.

24-year-old Brown has just returned from a loan spell with Stockport County, where he appeared 16 times in League One. The Irish defender was due to spend the full season with The Hatters, but Blackburn recalled him once the window opened.

Brown has appeared once at senior level for Rovers after spending his formulation years in the League of Ireland with Shelbourne and Drogheda. Whilst with Drogheda, he won the 2020 League of Ireland First Division title and was selected for the 2021 PFAI Premier Division Team of the Year. Such was his popularity, he was captain of the side and was voted Supporters’ Player of the Year.

However, he has struggled to break through at Ewood Park, and his recall seems to be about him getting senior football on a regular basis elsewhere, despite having appeared for Rovers in their last two Under 21 matches. At 24, he’s likely to want senior football to help kickstart his Championship prospects, and Blackburn have had success with such loans in the past. Scott Wharton has loan spells with Lincoln City, Bury and Northampton Town before returning to his parent club and establishing himself as a first-team regular.

Danny Schofield’s Rovers are slowly climbing the League Two table after a challenging start to life back in the basement division. The South Yorkshire side are seemingly looking to plug gaps at the back, with Leicester’s Ben Nelson joining them today.

Our View

At 24, Brown desperately needs a run of senior games to convince Blackburn he’s got potential there or to secure a Football League move once his contract expires. His spell with Stockport wasn’t a disaster, but when you start fewer than 50% of the league games available, it can be argued it’s not a success either.

Doncaster looks like a club on the up – they’ve taken 15 points from the last nine fixtures, but they’ve only kept one clean sheet in their last nine competitive fixtures, stretching back to October. If they can stop leaking goals, they’re likely to be on the fringes of the play-off race for the remainder of the season, which could leave them and James Brown feeling good.
