‘Could be a long summer’ – These Portsmouth fans react to latest transfer snub

Jayden Stockley has penned a three-and-a-half-year deal with Charlton, seemingly delivering a late snub to Portsmouth.

It seemed that the former Exeter City man was ready to put his Preston struggles behind him and join the Cowley revolution at Fratton Park, but today’s news confirms Pompey fan’s fears – they’ve missed out on another target. With striker Ellis Harrison looking likely to leave Pompey, they could have just one senior striker on their books soon. Obviously, that won’t be the case going into the season, but then again the Cowley brothers are known for not carrying many strikers.

During their time at Lincoln, where a Jayden Stockley goal helped deny them a place in the 2018play-off final, they were known for having only a couple of out-and-out strikers in their side. They had Matt Rhead, Ollie Palmer and Matt Green in 2017/18, no more, then Rhead, Green and John Akinde the following season, with Green leaving midway through. However, with Stockley snubbing the new Pompey bosses, they currently only have John Marquis and will have to turn their attention elsewhere.

Pompey fans have been reacting to the news that Stockley has chosen south London over the south coast, with a mixture of anger and acceptance. yes, he scored eight in his short stint at Charlton and he is a threat at League One level, but they have seen enough players who haven’t had their heart in the blue shirt to recognise a near miss. At least that is the view of a handful of fans, with this selection split as to whether his snub is a good thing or not.
