‘Waste of space’, ‘Shambles’ – These Ipswich fans react to key moment v Lincoln City

Ipswich Town’s good start to the season was well and truly derailed as they lost 1-0 to Lincoln City yesterday.

Paul Lambert’s side had topped the table, but back-to-back defeats against Doncaster Rovers and The Imps have seen them slip to fourth, three points behind their opponents yesterday who are in first place.

The two sides met four times last season and with two ex-Imps in the Ipswich starting line-up, there was some familiarity for fans watching at home. The best chances of the first half fell to Lincoln, Jorge Grant scooping over from six yards out, as well as hitting the bar with a deflected effort. Oli Hawkins had a header cleared off the line for the visitors before Tomas Holy made a stop with his feet to deny Brennan Johnson.

A tepid second half sprung to life 13 minutes from time when on-loan Forest attacker Johnson was nudged off the ball by Toto Nsiala. The referee awarded a penalty, with Grant despatching his fifth goal from the spot this season. The Imps almost made it two, James Jones catching Holy out of his goal, but the big stopper again managing to get a toe on the ball at the last minute.

The game exploded deep into stoppage time with Lincoln on the break. Former Imps midfield Jon Nolan lunged in wildly at Harry Anderson, rightly earning a straight red card and prompting a melee which saw Tayo Edun and Teddy Bishop booked. It was a reckless challenge worthy of a red card, and compounded Ipswich’s misery.

The aftermath saw Lambert storm on the field to receive his marching orders, too, but it was the red card for Nolan which had fans reacting on Twitter, as you’ll see below.
