‘Sad to see the club in this way’ – Many Sunderland fans react to yet another social media post

Sunderland’s social media team took the opportunity to promote some of the latest items in their club shop today but seemingly scored an embarrassing own goal with supporters.

The Black Cats have launched a ‘club and country’ range, which mixes the St George’s Cross with the Sunderland badge on a range of polo shirts and items. The club press release said: “As the internationals are upon us and Sunderland not in action this weekend, many of us will be sitting back and watching England’s upcoming matches.

“And exclusive to the SAFC Online Store, we are proud to launch our ‘club and country’ range of t-shirts and polos, enabling you to get kitted out in support of the Lads and the Three Lions.”

The items are reduced from £25, suggesting they haven’t sold particularly well, and the reaction on social media has hinted that they might need to drop a bit more before they become regularly seen on Wearside.

With so much classy clubwear available across football these days, a savvy marketing team need only reproduce a classic kit of old or make an item stylish with only a nod towards the club branding, but sticking two contrasting logos on one item simply doesn’t seem to cut the mustard.

These fans were quick to have their say about yet another own goal from the club.
