‘We haven’t really had a pre season’ – Our Grimsby Town fan looks at the campaign ahead

We’ve got Grimsby Town fan Alex Green answering question for you this morning, giving some insight into the season ahead for the Mariners.

Sum up last season from your perspective?

Last season started full of pragmatic football with promising signings followed by a hammering at Chelsea and then a tirade of swearing ending Michael Jolley’s time at the club. Then in came Olly there was a buzz and life got more entertaining our always incredible away followings got louder and before this blasted virus we were able to thoroughly hammer our smaller neighbours who have spent millions just to get to the bottom half of League Two.

What has the transfer business been like this summer?

Our signings seem to be more focused on the long term. Two strikers have come in from Non League and another from the Welsh League, Mohsni could be exciting but he hasn’t played much football recently and neither has George Williams who could be a brilliant signing if his injury worries are behind him. I think we’re still very short of experience up front and defensively we could also be stronger. I am happy to wait till the end of the window if it means Olly gets the right man in.

How has pre-season been for you?

Worryingly we haven’t really had a pre season, we have played one proper friendly and that was against our town rivals Cleethorpes Town who sit at level 7. By the way they play in Grimsby and we play in Cleethorpes, interesting? More interesting than our pre season I would argue.

Which players are looking like they’ll stand out this season?

Hanson, Williams and Max Wright all stand a chance to be head and shoulders above the rest. Max Wright is a local lad who has spent a lot of time out on loan excelling everywhere he has been with Olly allowing him to go forward he could be very exciting this season. His pace and confidence can leave the opposition in his wake but he’s 22 now and it feels like this has to be the season he puts his mark on league football.

Any players likely to explode onto the scene from nowhere?

The three signings I mentioned earlier really could do. Sisay formerly of Paris FC looks like he could become a real asset and Ira Jackson Junior has been banging them in for Folkestone 26 goals in 36 games. The fans of the two clubs were both proud and sad to see their players leave to join an EFL team so hopefully they can make the step up and continue their great form. Montel Gibson is the most likely of the trio to hit the ground running he scored 31 in 46 games for Halesowen so they all know where the goal is which is something you usually cant find scraping around in League Two.

What matches are you looking forward to most this season?

Aside from the first one I can get in to? The derby with Scunthorpe is always one to look for and the game against Leyton Orient is one fans look forward to as well. We have a heavy number of exiles down in the south east who love a trip in to London for the game and they are usually joined by a few hundred fans from Aalst in Belgium who we have a great relationship with. They spent a few hours after the game last season blasting music out of their coaches and dancing in the streets, the atmosphere is always worth going to on it’s own.

What can teams expect from you this season?

With Olly in charge? I would imagine entertainment and a good interview after the match. It’s great to have him as our manager and its odd to see opposition fans keen to get our managers signature as he goes to the dugout. We will score a lot and concede almost as many a BTTS bet is going to be a good moneymaker for most on us next season.

Where do you think you’ll finish?

15th I reckon at this moment with no marque signing I think that’s a fair guess. I just hope we finish the season with all 24 clubs still in business.
