Coventry City have been awarded the League One title on a points per game basis after League One opted to end this season early.
Mark Robins’ side were ahead of the pack by five points and had a game in hand, making them as worthy champions as they can be. Had last season been ended the same way, Luton Town would still have won the division, suggesting this is one aspect of the season ending that the method has got spot on.
Coventry faced a season away from their home city, playing in front of smaller crowds at St Andrew’s. They had a smaller, uncertain budget because of the issues they faced over their home, and yet they still ended up taking the title, their second promotion in three years. With the EFL trophy win behind them as well, the Sky Blues are slowly becoming accustomed to some sort of success after years of struggle and decline.
The Championship now awaits and hopefully, a resolution to their ground issues which allows them to reap the rewards of having a strong fan base and rich history. There are plenty of sad stories around the decision to end this season early, but Coventry being promoted is simply not one of them. Even their landlords, Birmingham City, took time to drop by and offer words of support.
Fans of other clubs seem to believe it is deserved too, with plenty reaching out and congratulating Mark Robins and his side on their achievement, albeit in a slightly shorter season than anticipated.
Congrats guys, well deserved. Best team in the league this season, all the best in the Championship!
