‘Enjoy the theatrics’ – Plenty of fans react as Tranmere announce latest signing

Tranmere Rovers yesterday completed the signing of James Vaughan on loan from Bradford City until the end of the season, as reported by us earlier in the week

Hours before they were beaten 1-0 by Sunderland in a tough encounter, they unveiled the former Premier League striker to fans.

The 31-year-old began his career with Everton, earning England honours up to Under 21 level and bagging nine goals in 60 appearances. He didn’t manage to live up to his early potential and saw loan spells with Derby, Leicester and Crystal Palace before joining Norwich City.

He bagged 31 goals in 86 Championship appearances for Bradford’s Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield, but his later career hasn’t been spectacular. A switch to Birmingham saw him leave goalless and he despite 24 goals for Bury, he struggled to impress at Sunderland, Wigan and again at Portsmouth last season.

He played 11 times for Pompey as failed to earn promotion without scoring a goal and signed for the Bantams as a free agent after leaving Wigan.

Manager Micky Mellon said: “I’m really pleased to get him into the Club. To get players like that into the place is how we are going to move the thing forward.

“I like his qualities as a player, and I like his character. He’s a winner and he’s a competitor and he’s a goal scorer. He’ll be a very popular member of the group as well because he’s a good leader and he’s a good influence on the rest of the group, so all round he’ll be a very good signing for Tranmere.“

Will he be a good signing for Tranmere? The feeling on social media is a little mixed, although likely tempered by their current form and league position.
