Hibernian are looking into the prospect of bringing high earning Sunderland winger Aiden McGeady to Easter Road according to journalist Alan Nixon.

Nixon is usually a reliable source of transfer gossip, and he tweeted the news yesterday.

One sticking point to the move could be the wages of the Republic of Ireland international who signed a one-year contract extension with the Black Cats in the summer, tying him to the club until 2021.

The winger has since been exiled by new boss Phil Parkinson and is currently training with the Black Cats’ under-23 side, having been told he is free to find a new club during the January window.

According to Nixon, Sunderland are willing to let McGeady go out on loan but want a contribution of around £10,000 a week towards his wages.

The visible link here is Hibs are managed by former Sunderland boss Jack Ross but Nixon’s comment that the club was ‘looking into it’ sparked an interesting reaction on social media from Hibernian fans.

Most felt there was little or no chance of the deal happening, and even if the Edinburgh outfit found the money, it would be a total waste of the club’s resources to sign the former Celtic man.

Here is a selection of responses to Nixon’s tweet from plenty of dubious Hibs fans.
