Sunderland have been alerted by the availability of Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp according to the Chronicle.
However, on a day where they’ve also been linked with a swoop for Kyle Lafferty, this 30-something striker would likely get pulses racing at the Stadium of Light. Sharp helped fire the Blades to the Premier League and has proven to be sharper and wiser in his latter years than he was during his prolific younger spell.
After being released by his beloved Blades as a youth, Sharpe moved to Scunthorpe United where he proved to be a revelation. He helped the Iron out of League Two and earned a move back to Bramall Lane. His second spell was more successful than his first, but he still struggled for goals and ended up moving to Doncaster Rovers.
He later played for Southampton, Nottm Forest and Leeds before going back home for a third spell, which proved to be a roaring success. He bagged 90 goals in 185 appearances, helping them climb from League One to the Premier League.
Sunderland are looking to add firepower to their ranks despite having Marc McNulty, Charlie Wyke and Will Grigg amongst their ranks.
Our View
Sunderland fans are hard to please, although they’ve seen little to even raise half a smile of late. Despite his age, this story should have them excited once again.
Sharp is a legend of the game, a huge character who has scored goals more or less throughout his career. He is experienced, hard-working and would be as much of an influence in the dressing room as he would be on the pitch.
If there is even a chance of getting this done, they need to sort it.
