Sunderland have been linked with a move for 32-year-old Northern Ireland striker Kyle Lafferty, as reported by the Scotsman.
The forward is currently a free agent after leaving Sarpsborg 08 in Norway and he had been linked with a possible return to Heart of Midlothian. Instead, it appears he’s now in talks with Phil Parkinson’s League One promotion hopefuls, who are five unbeaten in the third-tier with a recent 3-1 win against Lincoln City.
Lafferty is well-travelled having previously played for Burnley, Palermo, Rangers, Malmo, Hearts and Norwich City to name a few.
He’s perhaps most well-known for his exploits at international level, hitting 20 goals in 70 outings for his country over a 13-year spell wearing the emerald green. He hasn’t bagged for them since November 2016 though, hitting one in a 4-0 win against Azerbaijan.
Sunderland have a plethora of strikers at their disposal, with Will Grigg, Marc McNulty and Charlie Wyke all having been involved in £1m+ deals over the last few seasons. None have been able to find form for the Black Cats though and McNulty’s loan looks likely to be terminated this January.
Sunderland fans, expecting something a little more exciting than a free agent in his thirties, have not reacted well to the news, as you’ll read below.

Lafferty may turn out to be a good addition but what worries me is he will be a short term solution currently we only have the following under ctr beyond this summer

He's been at Sarpsborg? Sounds like a lager that Lidl would make.
