Bolton in the hunt for 22-year-old defender

Bolton Wanderers are one of several clubs looking to sign Burnley centre-back Jimmy Dunne according to journalist Alan Nixon

It has long been rumoured that Dunne was on his way to Aberdeen following his early return to parent club Burnley from a loan spell at Fleetwood Town.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international’s loan was cut short by Cod Army boss Joey Barton due to a ‘discipline breach.’

The twenty-two-year-old made eleven appearances and scored one goal following his arrival at Highbury on a season-long deal in the summer. He’s previously spent time on loan at Sunderland, Hearts, Accrington, and Barrow and is yet to make a first-team outing for the Clarets.

Bolton boss Keith Hill is looking restructure his defence in the wake of a lacklustre defensive display in the recent 4-3 home defeat by Burton Albion. Sheffield United’s Jake Wright and Preston’s Josh Earl both returned to their parent clubs in the wake of a performance full of defensive errors.

Rumours also persist of a possible return for former Trotters stalwart and captain David Wheater who left the club in the summer for Oldham Athletic.

Our View

Barton remained tight-lipped over what happened at Fleetwood, but whatever it was, Dunne’s next club will be hoping he’s learned a lesson.

His contract at Burnley expires in the summer, and at the moment, another deal seems unlikely unless he excels on loan in the second half of the season.

He has talent but needs to start producing consistently for his career to flourish.

If he finds his levels, he could be a decent signing for the Trotters.

As for Wheater, he’s not impressed Oldham fans, and many would not lose any sleep if the veteran were to return to the University of Bolton Stadium.
