Carlisle United were thrashed 4-1 by League Two high-flyers Crewe at Gresty Road yesterday to leave them staring down the barrel of League Two relegation for the second time in their modern history.
The Cumbrians are currently twenty-first in the table, eight points above the relegation place but on a dreadful run of form that’s not been reversed by the recent sacking of manager Steven Pressley and his replacement with Chris Beech.
The Blues have won only two league games since the clocks went back and another terrible display saw promotion hopefuls Crewe cruise to an easy win that leaves them third in the table.
A sixteen-minute first-half spell saw Crewe dismantle the Carlisle defence and prompt chants of ‘can we play you every week’ from the home supporters and further misery and embarrassment for the away fans. Die-hard Blues supporters have now seen their team fall from promotion hopefuls to relegation candidates in a disastrous twelve months for the club.
Disgruntled Carlisle fans were not happy when they took to social media to react to the result and ongoing decline in their fortunes, with many forecasting a return to the National League where they last spent a season in 2005/06.
