‘Utterly dreadful,’ ‘Going down’ – Plenty of Tranmere fans react to latest heavy home defeat

Tranmere Rovers slumped to a 4-1 home defeat to Coventry City yesterday on a cabbage patch of a pitch to leave them in the League One relegation places.

It has not been an easy season for Rovers on their return to the third tier, and they were no match for a Coventry side who moved up to third in the table with their second away win of the season.

Sky Blues striker Matty Godden scored a hat-trick for the second successive game, taking advantage of a mostly static defence to net his first two and then cap a great display by converting a penalty in injury time.

It is a result that sees Tranmere manager Micky Mellon coming under increasing pressure from supporters despite his fantastic record at Prenton Park. Mellon has overseen the Birkenhead outfits rapid rise from the National League to League One in successive seasons. While calls for his sacking are still quite muted, the Prenton Park faithful were not happy when they took to social media to react to the latest heavy home defeat.

Many fans feel a return to League Two is a distinct possibility and Mellon’s attempt to shore up a leaky defence with the signing of experienced defender Peter Clarke from Fleetwood was not greeted with any great enthusiasm. Plenty feel more and indeed better quality reinforcements are needed if they are to preserve their hard-won League One status.

Here is a selection of responses to the result on Twitter.
