Liverpool set to beat Leeds United in hunt for exciting EFL star

Liverpool are the team most likely to move for Coventry City left back Sam McCallum, as reported by 90 Minutes.

The 19-year-old has risen through the ranks with the Sky Blues and has been attracting interest from the likes of Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Leeds tracking his progress.

However, it is the reigning European Champions who look most likely to win the race, according to reports. They plucked their current left-back, Andrew Robertson, from a fellow English club in Hull City and have demonstrated a willingness to give talent on these shores a chance to shine.

McCallum, who Coventry manager Mark Robins described as ‘outstanding’ in their recent FA Cup tie with Ipswich, has made just 19 League One outings for the Sky Blues in two seasons, as well as a number of appearances in cup competitions.

He’s thrived this season, with Robins recently admitting he could lose the youngster but that it would take a big bid to prise him away.

“I would like to think yes, but I am not stupid,” he told the Coventry Telegraph. “Money talks and it’s not any different at any other club, regardless of where they are in terms of stature and division.

“If someone comes in with the right money then people will be available, there’s no two ways about it.”

Liverpool are surely a game-changer. Maybe, if one of the other three came in, the lure of regular football might keep him at St Andrew’s. The Reds are different though; reigning European Champions, Premier League title favourites and one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Coventry could be set for a season or two from the sale of the youngster and given his relatively limited exposure to first-team football it wouldn’t be a huge blow.

One would even imagine a loan back might be possible, giving him senior football whilst on the Reds’ books.
