League One chairman calls out Ipswich Town fans after cup defeat

Peterborough went out of the EFL Trophy last night on a penalty shoot-out against fellow League One side Ipswich Town.

They fell behind in the first half to Idris El Mizouni’s goal but were level before the break as Ricky Jade-Jones bagged. The score remained level until the final whistle, necessitating a penalty shoot out.

Siriki Dembele and Frankie Kent missed their spot-kicks to send Posh out of the competition, but that was only the start of the evening’s entertainment. Chairman Darragh MacAnthony took to Twitter to express his opinions after Ipswich Town fans decided to goad him on social media.

“Ipswich fans all over my timeline full of glee about beating our kids & reserves,” he tweeted. “Enjoy your night gloating. I’m ok about it. We won the trophy a few years ago. Hopefully you’ll get the same opportunity this season. Good luck in rest of the constant.”

There’s little doubt both teams fielded weakened sides, although Posh did finish the game with £13m-rated Ivan Toney and record signing Mo Eisa on the field.

Peterborough did win the competition in 2013/14, whilst Ipswich are competing for the first time by virtue of their recent relegation out of the top two divisions.

Our View

We love MacAnthony here; he’s a larger than life character that is clearly good for the game. We need people like him, open and honest, in football. Sure, he’s a bit smoke and mirrors when it comes to transfers but he connects with fans and, love him or loathe him, Posh fans connect with him.

He’ll call you out if you post rubbish, he’ll be honest when his team have been poor and he’s not averse to a bit of ‘banter’ with rival fans, which is refreshing.

Calling your own first-team hopefuls ‘kids and reserves’ though… wow.
