Gillingham and Bolton are amongst the clubs being linked with a move for 31-y/o striker Victor Anichebe, as reported by ‘Ex Agent’ James Goodwin.
Anichebe has been with Doncaster Rovers for much of the season, but has been unable to agree on a deal and left the club this week. He’s now a free agent and as December draws in, he’s being linked with trials at a number of clubs.
Gillingham have struggled for goals this season and are one of the clubs being linked with a move for the former Everton striker. Bolton Wanderers, still putting together a squad in hope of surviving in League One, are also mentioned as one of the possible suitors.
Lincoln City and Southend are the other two clubs said to be looking at the striker. Southend United earned a draw against Burton Albion yesterday, whilst Lincoln fielded an unnamed trialist up front in a friendly win against Scunthorpe United.
Anichebe, who has 11 caps for Nigeria, made his name at Everton before stints with West Brom and Sunderland. He later went over to China to play for Beijing Enterprises but has been trying to earn a deal at the Keepmoat this season.
Our View
Could Anichebe do a job for someone? He’s never been prolific but is a burly hold-up man who might suit the rather rough and tumble nature of lower League One.
It does seem a little speculative to suggest a number of clubs are in for him, but Anichebe will know in a month’s time he won’t be able to offer the benefits he does now; being able to play straight away.
Would a club take a risk on him for a month, in the hope he saves them a few quid in January? Possibly, but his wage demands will have to be lower than he used to, that’s for sure.
