A host of Championship clubs are thought to be monitoring Southampton’s Thomas O’Connor, currently on loan with Gillingham, as reported by Football League World.
The Gills knocked Sunderland out of the FA Cup last night and 20-year-old O’Connor has played an important role in their recent success. He missed the weekend’s win against Lincoln City and last night’s victory, but he did play in the Gills draw with the Black Cats in the first round, taking his tally to 14 starts and one goal.
The 20-year-old can operate as a left back or left wing back and has quickly adapted to the rigours of League One football. His loan deal only runs until January and it’s now believed a number of second-tier clubs are coveting his signature. O’Connor came through Saints’ academy and has captained their Under-23 side, as well as agreeing deal with the club until the summer of 2021 over the summer.
It’s believed that his parent club, struggling in the Premier League, are taking a close interest in his development, but that unnamed Championship clubs are hopeful of a January deal.
Our View
The report is a bit unspecific; with the form O’Connor is showing there’s no surprise other clubs are taking a look. After all, if they can get him into a Championship side over the winter than it would only serve to highlight his progression even further.
Gillingham are a good side, but O’Connor could quickly outgrow them. He’s clearly valued at St Mary’s with his recent deal and if there is a clamour for his signature, Gills fans might have to ready themselves for his impending departure.
