Sunderland went out of the FA Cup last night in another tough evening for their long-suffering supporters.
They’d been held to an uninspiring 1-1 draw in the First Round game against Gillingham, necessitating a replay in Kent. After 90 minutes a dour display from the Black Cats had failed to produce a goal, with the home side looking organised and resolute if unspectacular themselves.
On the stroke of half time in extra time, Brandon Hanlan struck to give Steve Evans’ side a memorable victory, sending Sunderland out of the FA Cup in the first round for the first time in their history.
It was a night of few chances, although Will Grigg was given a chance of sorts; he started the game and was being looked to for inspiration. He didn’t provide it.
When he finally came off in extra time it was to be replaced by a youngster who has come through the academy. £4m worth of striker off without a goal, again. He wasn’t roundly booed, the travelling supporters barely had it in them to care at that point, but he’s since been torn to shreds on social media, as you’ll see below, not only for coming off but also for his missed chances
doesn’t sound like him that
