‘He is getting stronger and quicker every day’ – Boost for Ipswich after positive injury news

Ipswich Town striker Freddie Sears has not kicked a ball in anger since picking up a cruciate knee ligament injury in February.

However, a return to action is on the horizon after the lastest club update on his recovery.

The twenty-nine-year-old was substituted in the 3-0 defeat by Norwich after he came off worse in a clash with Canaries midfielder Tom Trybull.

The former West Ham forward has scored thirty goals for the Tractor Boys since arriving from Colchester United in 2015, and despite his injury, he signed a new two-year contract with the club in the summer.

Speaking to the club’s official website, assistant manager Stuart Taylor gave a positive update on his progress. ‘Having him back on the training field has given the lads a lift because they can see how far he’s come; how close he is.’

‘He has responded really well. He is getting stronger and quicker every day; getting more confident as well, which is really important.’

‘He’s a great character; he’s loved in the dressing-room. We are really happy with him, but he’s still a good bit away from featuring in the first-team.’

Ipswich travel to Lincoln City tonight for a first-round FA Cup reply which is a repeat of their third-round encounter in 2017. The Imps, then in the National League, dumped an Ipswich side that was struggling in the Championship under Mick McCarthy out the competition in a memorable night at Sincil Bank.

While an immediate return to the Championship is boss Paul Lambert’s top priority, many fans would love a cup run and will be hoping for no repeat of their last visit to Lincolnshire. Winners in 1978, the Tractor Boys recent record in the competition is woeful, having not won a match since January 2010.

They currently sit second in League One, three points behind this season’s surprise package Wycombe, with two games in hand.

Our View

The news is a boost for Ipswich as they look towards the busy Christmas period.

While James Norwood and Kayden Jackson have scored fourteen goals between them so far, Sears will add something different to Lambert’s attacking options.

In our opinion, a fit and firing Sears would be too much for most League One defences to handle.
