Celtic are one of a number of clubs thought to be interested in Gillingham prospect Joe Walsh.
The Evening Times report that the young keeper is catching the eye of a number of top clubs, with Manchester City, Spurs and Everton also thought to be in the hunt. RB Leipzig are also believed to be watching his progress.
The 17-year-old signed his first professional contract with the Gills in May, penning a three-year deal with the club. According to the report, Celtic were in attendance in midweek, watching the giant keeper as he starred for the Gills against Tottenham’s under-23 side in the EFL Trophy.
Having been on the periphery of the squad all season, Walsh’s senior experience has been limited to the trophy, making his debut at home as they went down 3-2 to Colchester.
He had a tough evening in early October as they were hammered 4-0 by Ipswich, but kept his first clean sheet against the Under 23 side.
Gillingham will be gutted to see this; if he moves as a young 17-year-old the initial fee wouldn’t be all that big. The real benefit would be if they get a decent sell-on clause and Walsh makes a name for himself.
Steve Evans does like a deal though and if he thinks there’s a chance to get a bit of a fee upfront, then a move is likely to materialise.
In terms of where to go, Walsh would surely be better staying close to home, with Spurs the obvious destination. A move to Leipzig or Celtic would be a huge culture shock and right now, he needs to focus on his football.
