Oldham Athletic crashed out the EFL Trophy last night with a 5-2 defeat at the hands of League One outfit Fleetwood Town.
It wasn’t a happy night for those Latics who made the trip; their side was 3-0 down inside fifteen minutes. A strong Fleetwood team was 4-1 up at half-time and added a fifth after the break. They also hit the bar before Oldham brought some semblance of respectability to the scoreline, netting a second goal with twenty-minutes remaining.
It meant Joey Barton’s men cruised into the second round and left Oldham fans with nothing to look forward to other than a League Two relegation battle. The Latics are twentieth in League Two with just three wins from their opening seventeen fixtures.
Oldham boss Dino Maamria gave a full debut to fifteen-year-old striker Zak Emmerson but otherwise fielded the strongest side he could with injury affecting several members of his squad. However, the gulf in class was evident to anyone watching, and the salt was further rubbed into the wounds of the Oldham faithful when former skipper Peter Clarke got on the scoresheet for Fleetwood’s first goal.
The Latics controversially released Clarke in the summer, a move which was massively unpopular with supporters who are now more than angry with the ownership of Abdallah Lemsagam.
They soon took to social media with their responses to the result which were a mixture of anger, gallows humour and apathy at the current plight of their club.
