Leyton Orient have sacked head coach Carl Fletcher after only twenty-nine days in charge at Brisbane Road.
The former youth coach at Premier League Bournemouth took charge of only five games during his time at the helm and failed to register a win in any of them.
Fletcher signed a contract with the O’s until 2021 on 16 October and succeeded Ross Embleton, who had been in interim charge after the tragic death of Justin Edinburgh in June.
The slump in the team’s form under Fletcher had seen the O’s slip to sixteenth in League Two. When they were knocked out the FA Cup by eighth-tier Maldon and Tiptree at home in the first round on Sunday, it only exacerbated the supporter hostility towards their seemingly hapless head coach.
Embleton will once again step up to the plate and take control of the first-team, along with Danny Webb and club captain Jobi McAnuff.
The appointment of Fletcher seemed doomed from the outset. Plenty of Orient fans did not take to the former Wales international midfielder from day one, and while results didn’t help, it was his perceived lack of charisma which often came in for criticism in post-match social media reaction.
Orient are expecting a big crowd for Saturday’s visit of Scunthorpe United after their ‘football for a fiver’ scheme once again proved to be a roaring success. However, fans were already brewing to make their thoughts known to the club’s hierarchy on Fletcher’s appointment if the match did not go well for the home side.
Judging by the positive reaction to the news from many Orient fans on social media It would appear the atmosphere will now be a little less hostile with the popular Embleton back in charge, although some supporters did question the robustness of the club’s recruitment process that led to Fletchers sacking within a month.
