Sunderland’s Grant Leadbitter gave a heartfelt interview in the aftermath of the club’s 3-0 defeat to Scunthorpe United, hinting at problems in the squad.
The Black Cats tumbled out of the competition after the defeat, having been beaten at home by Leicester City Under 21s the week before. Sandwiched in between was a 1-1 draw with struggling Gillingham at the Stadium of Light, capping off a woeful week in the club’s history.
Leadbitter, who returned to his boyhood club last season, cut a despondent figure after the game, clearly upset at the defeat at Glanford Park. Whilst two late goals gave the scoreline a convincing feel it perhaps didn’t warrant, it doesn’t take away from Sunderland’s plight.
Ten years after beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, they’re struggling to get past Leicester’s kids and a collection of Scunthorpe reserves. It’s tough for fans to take and Leadbitter hinted at the problems the club faces; “It’s a disappointing result but we must stick together at times like this,” he said, before ominously adding; “We can’t have groups”.
Is there a wider problem for Phil Parkinson’s side? It would certainly seem so based on results and the supporters are the ones who suffer. Having fallen far in the space of three years, there are no signs that they’re on their way back and. sadly, these fans know it.
