It was first against 22nd in the EFL Trophy at the Bescot Stadium last night, with the Saddlers somehow running riot against Mark Cooper’s Forest Green Rovers.
The trophy is full of surprises, one being that this 6-0 victory wasn’t the highest-scoring game of the evening, but that won’t bother Daryl Clarke who will be delighted to finally see an attacking performance from his side.
There were plenty of changes to his starting XI in the league, but they got their rewards as a hat-trick from Josh Gordon and goals from Wes McDonald, Liam Kinsella and Cameron Norman secured them a place in the knockout stages.
Gordon bagged a brace before half time to give his side a 2-0 lead, adding a penalty just after the break to kill off the tie. Forest Green’s Aaron Collins then foolishly picked up a red card for two bookings after arguing with the ref, before Mcdonald and Kinsella netted within minutes of each other to give the scoreline some gloss.
Cameron Norman added a sixth on the final whistle to kill off the youthful-looking visitors. The win means it’s the Saddlers who go though, with Forest Green going out of the competition.
Whilst these Saddlers fans would surely rather have league points, they’re still delighted to see their side get a big win at home.
Well that was unexpected 😂. I haven't had that much fun watching Walsall since Dean Smith was in the dugout. Hopefully this is the turning point and the Darrell Clarke reign starts from here. Come onnnnnn
