Ipswich and Colchester both progressed to the knockout stages of the EFL Trophy, but it was another winless game for the Tractor Boys after their FA Cup stalemate with Lincoln City at the weekend.
They were lucky to get a 1-1 draw against The Imps at Portman Road, facing a penalty at 1-0 down but coming back for the draw. With a blank weekend thanks to the international break, Paul Lambert could have afforded a few first team players a run out last night.
Instead, a weakened side visited League Two Colchester. Gwion Edwards and Tomas Holy both started, but the makeshift centre back pairing of Tota Nsiala and James Wilson continued to feature, along with Myles Kenlock and Janoi Donacien.
Lambert’s side paid the price for the side they put out, with the League Two side grabbing a deserved win in the 80th minute through Ryan Tamplin. Whilst the Tractor Boys still progressed, it was still a defeat, meaning they’ve lost three of their last six fixtures.
That’s not a run of form they’ll sustain for long, but it’s still caused a few fans to complain on Twitter. They’re not keen on Pau Lambert’s sole striker approach or the decision to rest the first team players once again, after doing so against Lincoln.
Another away game engineered!
