‘Glorified friendly’, ‘Joke tournament’ – These Rotherham fans make no secret of their feelings after cup exit

Rotherham United tumbled out of the EFL Trophy last night, going down 3-0 against Lincoln City at Sincil Bank.

Their hosts needed a 4-0 win to progress to the next round, with Rotherham just needing a draw. Fielding the likes of Michael Smith, Freddie Ladapo, Jake Hastie and Matthew Olosunde, the Millers had a strong feel to their side.

Lincoln handed a first start to Ben Coker after a year out with injury, as well as a first appearance of the season for former Rotherham hero Lee Frecklington. Having struggled for goals of late, the home side raced into a 2-0 lead after 11 minutes courtesy of a John Akinde brace.

In a decent outing for both clubs, neither looked happy to be going out the competition in the first half, but the game died a death at half time, only for a late Tyler Walker goal to give the hosts hope of progress.

In the end, neither side will feature in the knockout stages, with Manchester United Under 21s and Doncaster going through. As Lincoln look to stay away from the bottom of the table and Paul Warne hopes to put his team in the top six, few fans will shed a tear over their lack of involvement in this competition.

That’s certainly the theme that runs through Rotherham fan’s tweets after the defeat.
