Harrogate Town were eliminated from the FA Cup last night as they went down 2-1 to League One side Portsmouth.
It was a brave showing from Simon Weaver’s side, who are hunting a place in the Football League after finishing in the play-offs last season. They will have to maintain that push without the luxury of prize money though despite having taken an early lead.
Mark Beck gave them a dream start on seven minutes with a goal, but their visitors were quickly level. Brandon Haunstrup bagged with little over a quarter of an hour gone, with Irishman Ronan Curtis lashing home a stunning second before half time.
The non-league side were not overawed by their illustrious opponents though. The 2008 winners played a full-strength first team and were often matched by Harrogate. The home side had more possession and although they had fewer shots, there have been teams in League One who have not quite got as close to levelling as they did.
The game almost didn’t go ahead at all thanks to two power cuts; one delayed kick off until 8.40 pm, with another looking like it might put an end to the fixture before the teams came out. Eventually, they did get underway andĀ George Thomson’s effort might have levelled it for Harrogate.
Pompey now face Altrincham in round two, but these fans are not convinced about their prospects this season, despite the first-round win.
