Portsmouth and Peterborough United are both keeping tabs on Cheltenham Town’s attacking midfielder Ryan Broom as reported by Gloucester Live.
With the January transfer window starting to loom on the horizon, the report claims Posh manager Darren Ferguson was in the stands at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium to watch Broom create one, score another and win the man of the match in Tuesday night’s 3-0 win over Macclesfield Town.
The attacking midfielder joined Cheltenham following his release by Bristol Rovers at the end of the 2017/18 campaign, and he’s gone on to make sixty-three outings for the Robins, scoring ten goals.
He spent much of last season playing at right wing-back, but this season he’s excelled in a number ten role and his displays have been a crucial factor in helping Michael Duff’s exciting side climb to second in the League Two table.
According to the report, the outstanding performances of the twenty-three-year-old have also caught the eye of Nigel Clough at Burton Albion, who continues to monitor his progress after trying to sign the Welshman in the summer.
However, Broom opted to sign a new two-year deal with the Robins who have continued to develop under Duff, adding some resilience to their away performances while at the same time maintaining their outstanding home form.
They travel to Grimsby Town at the weekend looking to push further their promotion credentials having remained unbeaten in their last eight games.
Our View
Duff has done a tremendous job at Cheltenham, but the downside of any success is that clubs higher up the pyramid take notice and start sniffing around your players.
Broom might currently struggle to get in at Peterborough who boast an array of attacking talent, but it is evident Portsmouth lack creativity, and he could be just the spark Kenny Jackett needs to provide the ammunition for big-money summer signing John Marquis.
Cheltenham fans will be keeping their fingers crossed he stays and helps them to League Two promotion, however tempting the money in any deal would be to both the player and the club.
