Versatile forward James Henry has signed a new deal with Oxford United the club have announced.
The U’s leading scorer for the past two campaigns was in the final year of his current deal, but he’s quashed concerns of a departure by putting pen to paper on an improved two-year contract with the option of an extra year.
The thirty-year-old joined Oxford from Wolves in 2017, and he’s become a key figure at the Kassam Stadium with his hardworking performances and eye for goal proving a big hit with supporters.
After leading the U’s scoring charts last season with fifteen across all competitions, Henry is once again leading the way this campaign with eight in sixteen outings as Karl Robinson’s men have quickly put an indifferent start behind them to climb the League One table.
A delighted Henry told the club’s official website: ‘It was an easy decision because I have loved my time at Oxford and am really enjoying my football right now.’
‘It is a pleasure to come into work every day and over the last year or so we have played some very good football, but also the club is heading in the right direction in everything I see. I am still ambitious and want to win things, and I am pleased that the club sees me as part of what they are building.’
U’s boss Robinson was also happy to get the deal over the line. He said: ‘It’s fantastic news for us. It’s not just the goals that he scores, ‘Jamo’ is also selfless and will always play for the team, whatever role you ask him to play.’
‘He has the respect of everyone in the building, and we see him as a key part of our plans for the next few seasons. It’s great to get this sorted nice and early as well, and we look forward to him continuing to play a leading role for us this season and beyond.’
Sixth-placed Oxford host struggling Rochdale tomorrow, hoping to build on an unbeaten run of seven league games and judging by the reaction to the announcement on social media there is a real feel-good factor around the Kassam Stadium at the moment with plenty of fans delighted with the news.
Some are also hoping Henry signing a new deal is the start of a number of other players committing their futures to the club with many hoping impressive midfielder Cameron Brannagan is the next t put pen to paper.
Here is a selection of their happy responses to the news on Twitter.
