Mark Robins has admitted striker Matty Godden could be out of action for a while after picking up a groin injury during training, as reported by Coventry Live.
The Sky Blues have been struggling for goals of late and Godden, a big-money buy from Peterborough United in the summer, should be the man to solve the problem. He scored 14 in 29 starts for Posh last season, but has just three in ten for Coventry in the league.
He hasn’t scored since September 7th and after missing matches against MK Dons and Fleetwood, Robins has admitted he may have to send the forward for surgery.
“He’s struggling and I’m still waiting to hear from the specialist as to what the treatment is for him, whether we need to be doing more or less,” said the former Manchester United striker. “But he’s clearly not right because he’s in pain.”
Godden, who also has one EFL Cup goal to his name, started his career with Scunthorpe United but later drifted into the non-league scene. His scoring exploits for Ebbsfleet attracted Stevenage, where he spent two years before moving to London Road.
Coventry are currently fourth in the League One table but have won just one of their last six fixtures in all competitions. During that run they’ve scored three goals, two of which came as they defeated Fleetwood on Wednesday night.
Our View
This is a huge blow for the Sky Blues. Godden, who was valued at £750,000 by his former club, has struggled to settle but still provides a goalscoring outlet.
Losing their big summer investment is going to be tough on Robins, especially if it’s for the long term. They’ve got massive matches coming up against Ipswich and Sunderland and if they struggle to score, they’ll soon find themselves tumbling out of the top six.
It may be time to look into their youth setup for talent; Will Bapaga and David Bremang have both impressed and might be called into action, albeit as subs.
