‘Messi has posters of you on his wall’, ‘Future captain’ – These Sunderland fans pay homage to their latest hero

Sunderland’s 5-0 win against Tranmere in midweek has brought back a feelgood factor that hasn’t been felt for some time.

After back to back league defeats against Lincoln City and Wycombe, the supporters needed something to lift the mood. Seeing Jack Ross leave wasn’t enough on its own; they needed to see a team of players playing for the badge.

Sunderland are far and away the biggest club in League One and they should be competing for the title, not languishing around the play-offs. They’ve struggled this season to kill teams off but finally, they put a poor Tranmere to the sword in midweek.

Luke O’Nien bagged one of the five goals and he’s tweeted that out with a pair of emojis, a red circle and white circle. In O’Nien the fans have a player they can truly call popular, a midfielder who has been forced to play full back but who has never been found wanting for effort.

He’s kept his reputation intact throughout the Jack Ross era and he’s a firm favourite of Black Cats’ fans. He’s down to earth, honest in interviews and he can play a bit as well.

His tweet brought a raft of Sunderland fans to social media to give him praise and respect that his endeavour surely deserves.
