Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after it was confirmed he’s suffered ankle ligament damage.
Manager Phil Parkinson revealed after the 1-0 defeat against Wycombe that Wyke, who endured an injury-hit season after leaving Bradford, is now set for another spell on the treatment table.
It capped a poor afternoon for the Black Cats, who trailed the Chairboys after half an hour of their game at Adams Park. They never looked like getting back into the encounter and mustered a solitary shot on goal. Wyke, who has just two goals from 12 outings this season, was replaced by Will Grigg on the stroke of half time.
Grigg, another big-money flop, could find a way through the committed Wycombe defence either, nor could Marc McNulty who brought the total value of their attacking talent to £6m if their last set of transfer fees are totted up.
Parkinson will now have just £5m worth of talent at his disposal as Wyke looks likely to be out for anything up to six months. It could be seen as a big blow for the club, but some supporters have already seen enough to believe they won’t actually miss the former Carlisle man.
